As part of the implementation of Connect, technical changes will be implemented to enable improvements in UBC data management and workflow practices associated with the LMS and associated administrative systems.
A new capability that will be implemented is streamlined access to course learning environments through Connect. On June 16, 2012, a course shell for every UBC course will be established by default. These starter shells are unavailable to students and may be activated upon request. Not all academic units will be fully transitioned to Connect by September 2012 and therefore may have alternate processes in place. Please contact your local Instructional Support team or Lynda Cooper (lynda.cooper@ubc.ca) for further information relating to your Faculty.
In addition to streamlining future access to a digital course environment for faculty members and students, this process enables the provision of a new Library Course Reserves capability (in support of copyright compliance) and strengthens UBC’s ability to support academic continuity in case of campus service disruptions (emergency or disaster situations).

Welcome to UBC’s new online learning environment, Connect. This new system was selected by a campus-wide committee to replace WebCT Vista, which is being retired by June 2014. Overall, we believe this learning environment will feel familiar to you, although there will be exciting new features that we encourage you to explore. The Summer 2012 Term is the first large-scale rollout of the system. We know that this system is new to many of you; the support community at UBC has been working behind the scenes to develop a wide range of resources to support your transition. This website is your gateway to those resources. In addition to the documentation and “just-in-time” learning resources you will find here, there are a myriad of opportunities to connect with colleagues face-to-face through workshops and drop-in sessions; these are advertised here as well.
We hope you find the website helpful! Members of the Connect Implementation Team – comprising of support staff from Faculties, the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology and UBC Information Technology – are committed to making this a positive experience for UBC’s teaching and learning community!

Vancouver (pronounced /væn.ˈkuːvər/) is a coastal city located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. It is named for British Captain George Vancouver, who explored the area in the 1790s. The name Vancouver itself originates from the Dutch “van Coevorden”, denoting somebody from Coevorden, a city in the Netherlands.[2]
The largest metropolitan area in Western Canada, Vancouver ranks third largest in the country and the city proper ranks eighth.[3][4] According to the 2006 census Vancouver had a population of 578,041[1] and its Census Metropolitan Area exceeded 2.1 million people.[1] Its residents are ethnically and linguistically diverse; 52% do not speak English as their first language.[5][6]

Environmental studies is the academic field which systematically studies human interaction with the environment. It is a broad interdisciplinary field of study that includes the natural environment, built environment, and the sets of relationships between them. While distinct from ecology and environmental science, the discipline encompasses study in the basic principles of those two fields of learning as well as the associated subjects, such as: policy, politics, law, economics, sociology and other social aspects, planning, pollution control, natural resources, and the interactions of human beings and nature.
